Here are a few of my 30 year collection of Antique Barber Poles. Currenty my collection consists of 41 Barber Poles.

I have a very rare Koken Neon barber pole and all except 4 of them are the early 1900s cast iron porcelain coated poles. Many of them have very rare globes on top from the 20s and 30s.

About 25 percent of them still have their original wind-up motors which, when wound fully, will spin the striped cylinder for 8 to 12 hours.

There is a mixture of nice original condition, fully restored condition, and awaiting restoration, within my collection and I love every one of them. I'll be looking for barber poles and their parts and pieces as long as I live.

As the pictures show, my workshop is a disaster . It is filled my lifelong collection of collections which I won't go into now. I am fully aware of the fact that I am an addict

Another maker of barber poles was Beauty Symbol they had neon inside that read Beauty Supply with a manikin where the inner cylinder would normally be. They were made in a Wall Hung version and a Sidewalk Mounted version. They were made of solid brass and then Nickel plated, very heavy. I had one of each but I'm sorry to say that during a weak moment I swapped them for other barber poles.

Cool room. I only have one old pole, but really like it. Your collection is great, love the old original globes. I have the wind up motor for my pole, but the spring has failed. Do you happen to know of a source of replacement wind up springs? Thanks for sharing your pics!
    3. MickeyH MickeyH, 12 years ago
Thanks for the comment ilikecoinop. I don't have a source for the main springs. Sometimes you can take them apart ansd if the break is near the end you can reform the end of the spring minus the broken part and reassemble it. I have heard of people laping the ends of the spring at the break and brazing them together. Sometimes they work ok and sometimes the repair makes them bind and they don't work so well.

      .

Yeah... If the broken part is near the outside end, you can remove the broken piece and cut the end of the spring and bend it so it will fit in the slot or clip or whatever held the broken piece.

Great collection. I'm new to collecting with only two early barber poles. What era is that square globe with "barber shop" on all sides? Is it embossed or painted? Love that neon Koken. One of my poles is the same style but without the neon.

Hi, I have a Kochen 95 The old style motor works but the fiber gear is too worn to be reliable. I tried a Marvy new motor but it over heated and locked up after only 3 months. Any ideas? Even some one with a 3d printer? Thanks for any help you have.

Looking for a price for the tall outdoor sidewalk paidair barber pole from the 1920.
    18. GaryM, 8 years ago
To Gab, There was a very nice Kochen 95 on e bay about 10 months ago. As I remember the price was in the neighborhood of four thousand. Now a days I would never put the pole outside. Mine is inside the shop window.

      Hello,
Nice collection, I appreciate the info!
I have an opportunity to get my hands on a stand up pole. The cylinder inside spins and the light in the top globe works as well as the light inside the spinning cylinder. It also has two hooks towards the top, probably for coats or hats.
      It is in fantastic condition.
What should I expect to pay for it. I have a picture if you would like to see one.
Any help or advice you can give would be appreciated.
      Thank you!!

Those old barber poles are really nice.

I love anything that reminds me of my younger days. My grandfather and then my uncle owned a barber shop (The O.K. Barber Shop) in Trumann, Arkansas when I was very young. Some of my absolute best memories were cultivated while sitting on the old shoeshine stand listening to their many "fishing tales" while cutting hair. I now proudly display that old shoeshine stand (hand carved oak with two separate layers of marble) that was purchased "used" in 1915.
I also have several pieces of a barber pole, but looking for parts to reassemble it. It is a Paidar Model 376 and would be interested if you have an idea where to look. Thanks so much!!
