Since there's a lot of experts on the site on trunks, I've decided to put my trunk on here and get some expert opinions on whether to keep it original or try to restore it. I found this about a year ago in southern Indiana. I love how the trunk is in it's current condition but would like to hear your opinions. Keep it original or restore it and is the trunk from the 1890's.

Michael,
That's a really nice leather trunk. I believe this may be a "Sole Leather Trunk". You'd be correct on the age of this one. Does this have a layout inside for a Masonic hat and shoulder boards? It looks like one of the Masonic trunks to me. Really nice find!!!
I would keep this one as original as possible, it has wonderful provenance.I can assure you that those Dr. Strong stickers(I love those) are not seen on an everyday basis. I would consider only cleaning and possibly a re-glue of sections of the leather that is coming away.I would do this only to keep intact what is currently present. Thanks for the post.

Thank you jscott0363 for stopping in and giving your opinion! I value your advice! In the top part of the trunk there is a lid. I'm not sure what you're talking about. Thank you again for stopping in and giving me your opinion! Merry Christmas!

I would imagine someone that owned this trunk ,needed some rest or possibly worked there.

Keep it as original as possible, retaining all edits from the party(ies) that purchased it. Affecting such would destroy a rare piece.
SpiritBear that's what I plan on doing! Thank you for stopping in and your input! Merry Christmas

In my very NON-expert opinion, I think it's great the way it is!...just the way it looked when the last person actually carried it.

Agree RE: Masonic Knights Templar history of this item. The only thing I might try to do is stabilize some of the rips in the leather with a few subtle stitches to prevent them from growing... a wonderful piece with a lot of history... no doubt scarce. Cheers! - Bob
