Can anyone date this will try to get better pics during daylight hrs, lightening in this room blows. I think it may have come out of Montreal. Bought at an auction in early 90s
Someone painted over it unfortunately rendering the 2 labels not readable.

OK vipertkd, I'll take a crack at this one, I have one very similar to this except my lock is different and the construction is different. All your hardware appears to be hand wrought iron, nails appear to be rose head nails, which are hand made one at a time, but pictures are a bit fuzzy. what I don't see is dove tail construction at the corners of the box part of the trunk, it almost looks like 45 degree angle cuts, I'am looking at the right front corner where it looks like there's some separation. My trunk has hand wrought iron hardware, rose head nails, dove tail corners and dowel pin construction and dates from late 1700's to early 1800's. Your trunk looks old but cant put it in the same time frame. I could be wrong but will say 1850 to 1870, based on what I'am not seeing. Hope this helps some, maybe someone else can shed more light on it, also could use better pictures.

Thank you so much ...now that it is daylight here are some more photos. What I always thought odd is to the left of lock/clasp appears to be what may have been the keyhole.

OK yeah, definitely a key hole, is there any kind of locking mechanism inside the trunk. Lock hasp may or may not be original to the trunk, and is not 45 degree angle corners, the angle of the first picture threw me off, still not dove tail corners rather a lap or over lap corner, and I still think mid 1800's give or take a little. Are the nail heads smooth and round or do they have hammer marks ?

P.S. This is what I call an early Immigrant trunk, probably from across the pound, making its way to north america 150 or so years ago. Not sure about the labels inside.

      nothing inside
      nails definitely hammer marks
labels are on outside and most likely a shipping label
sucks that someone painted over them

I don't think the latch is original or it has been repaired as nails are different
      much more recent

Well the key hole is a mystery, but that's the way it is with most trunks, if they could only talk.
