We came across this at an old estate sale for an antique shop that has been closed and gathering dust for decades. What is it? My hubby thinks it's copper. I don't know. It was pretty green before we started cleaning it up. Maybe it's an old cigarette case with a place for a tintype? With extra clips inside? It's about 4" by 3.5" and 1.5" deep. Hopefully someone can tell us what it really is! Thank you!
I think this might be a travelling writing tablet . The clip held a small ink bottle. Google vintage copper writing tablet and have a look at images. They look similar.

Roy, everything that comes up is much larger, I don't know!
You are right bill. Now thinking it might be an ink pad case.
That might be it, because there are no clips to hold cigarettes in place, it is odd. Maybe for rolling cigarettes, the bottom is about 1" deep, like for holding tobacco, but that little clip confuses me. For lighter? I'm sure someone will know! :^)
Thanks, guys! I think we're getting closer. Someone out there has to have all the answers! Could what I originally thought was a place to put a photo be some sort of makeup compact? This thing is so weird and confusing!
Found one on Pinterest they describe it as a Elgin American art deco woman's compact carry all
1930,s 1940,s circa according to the seller. I googled vintage brass compact engraved impala,s. Image came up on Pinterest.
I think it's a compact. It seems to have a space for powder, a mirror & possibly a space for a small lipstick?
This looked very similar! https://www.etsy.com/listing/171830016/1900s-victorian-german-silver-compact
Thanks, everyone, for all the love and help! It's so wonderful to get answers right away. I'd have been stewing over this one for weeks!??
