Found this in my great grandmothers trunk in a container with a bunch of victorian hat pins. Nothing in the trunk was newer than 1920. The brass bar is less than 1 foot long. The chain with cut amethyst glass beads can be detached on one side with a clip. I'm clueless. Any ideas on what it would of been used for?
I'm also clueless - I've never seen such thing. :-(
Luxury ladies dog leash (small dogs, of course). Makes sense.
Cheers
Muff guard chain, created to string through a muff of fur that kept a woman’s hands warm when she was outside, and held it when she was inside.
Ivan, perhaps the lady used her dead dog as a muff, eek! ;-)
Welcome to CW!
kyratango- I've only seen guards that where made from chains. Never attached to a 1 foot bar. The chain and clip is right, have you seen one with a bar?
Me too, this is the first I can find with a bar.
The bar size is consistent with a muff size, and seems more convenient than the only chain for this use :-)
waiting for CW friends opinions on this mysterious chain!
I am inclined to agree with you Kyra............the bar through the muff would take the strain off the chain being the only thing supporting the muff with the chain around the neck.......if that makes sense....not easy to describe!!
