I'd been chasing an example of this Thomas Webb cameo vase for a while but kept falling short.  I was finally able to grab this one a couple of weeks back. The thing that I love most about it is the three color combination of citron, red and white, as opposed to the more common two-color cameo vase.

For those of you who aren't familiar with cameo glass, it's an interesting process.  First, as in my case, a blob of citron molten glass is submerged in molten red glass followed by opaque white resulting in three separate layers.  After blowing the glass into the desired shape and cooled, its ready to be worked.

The next step, is to mask off the pattern of the desired decoration. This is done by using heavy vinyl, bees wax or some other acid resistant material.

The vase is then etched down to the inner layer leaving behind the design outline in white relief. It can be etched in several ways - by submerging the glass in hydrofluoric acid, sandblasting or carving. The remaining white relief is finely detailed using grinding wheels, drills and carving.

Here is a beautiful example Illustrated in the book, "English Cameo Glass" by Ray and Lee Grover. I've used an online photo as it's of better quality. Notice the incredible amount of detail and depth that can be achieved by using only shading. If you blow up the photo, you can even see the image she's painted on the canvas.

I went to the link you have here and tell me, that 'piece' is on/in a vase? It is so very, I am speechless. Speechless. I love them both. Do you know of a link to a video to watch the process, I would love to see it. I am so curious to know how many hours are put into this work of art?

I have two pieces in my collection-- not up to the beauty of yours. The three color examples are extraordinary!

I truly appreciate your fine comments and love Bill, Peggy, Lisa, Sean, Thomas Roy, Craig, Susie, and Scott, and I equally appreciate the love Rneiderman, Thomas, Roddy, EZA, JIm, Mike, Bijou, Ivonne, Vlad, Kevin, Fort, Tassie, TimeTraveler and Aura!

@Susie... Thanks for such an enthusiastic comment. The piece is entitled, " On the Terrace" a cameo plate done by Thomas and George Woodall in 1895.

Here's a video demonstrating a basic technique. Hopefully it works, if not, just Google Cameo glass technique and you'll find an example from the Corning Glass Museum:

@Craig... Thank you, I'd love to see yours someday.

@Scott... I too love Cameo glass. I marvel at the tallent and it must take to make these beautiful works of art!

@Sean... Thank you. I thought you guys might enjoy reading the process, I feel it adds even more to the enjoyment of the piece knowing the work that went into it :-)

@Lisa... I agree the color combination is what really excites me :-)

@Bill... Your comments are always so kind and flattering, and I appreciate it!

Masterful cameo. For me, the reduced palette means more skill is required to make it work.
A stunner Rick. I wish I could visit you and Gloria to see your treasures.

Thank you for the love and comment Karen, and thanks for the love Spirit and Mani, it's all appreciated!

@Karen... I agree, it must take tremendous amount of skill to carve all of the intricate detailing involved in making one of these. Come on over we love company!
