I just bought this trunk on craigslist this morning. It's not in awful shape, its not in great shape. I've never bought a trunk before and despite my research I can't seem to find a trunk close to this one to gain information of any kind. I bought this for my husband to keep in his "map room" as I thought it would be a great addition. I'm fairly confident the hardware has all been painted as well as the brown straps/slats. It's lok works but has no key and the canvas has a few tears here and there. No insert but a picture of a girl (danish i believe) on the inner lid.

These are the craigslist ad photos and I bought this on my way to work, so it's in my trunk (car trunk!) now---I can take better/more photos in the near future. I'm trying to figure out if there are any parts I could make efforts to restore or any way I can improve on this trunk as it will be a large focal point where it sits.

    Thanks for all your help!

very cool and interesting trunk, I believe your trunk is covered in leather and not canvas, I can see embossing in the leather on the front and a crack in the leather on the left lower side. I have never seen hardware like what is on the front corners under the lid, can't tell if the hardware is painted or polished out, hardware was coated in tin to give it a bright silvery finish. I don't believe the brown tin is original most tin was black, would like to see more pictures, very nice looking trunk. greendog

Your trunk may have been made by Martin Maier in Detroit Mich. it looks like it has Martin Maier patented hinges on the back corners.
