The iris is a favorite floral emblem of mine.
Poker work was a popular past time for those who lived without television here in Australia in the thirties. I can't be sure but this doiley cover is a bit earlier. I am not sure if it is Australian or it might well be English. It's certainly not the regular Ozzie flora and fauna.
It keeps the lace doileys flat and safe.

Hi mon amie, you untie one of the ribbons and the other becomes a hinge.
Real simple stuff; very arty and crafty.
My Mum was good at crochet but nothing like her aunt. She did work on one needle in the Irish manner that resembled fine bobbin lace. At home in my youth I'd watch the old girls doing their craft and chatting. I even had a go at it. It seems that in the old days everyone, male and female would knit or crochet; they used their spare time constructively, creatively. Craft was then still alive before TV took hold of our lives. My grandmother Maud was not as good as her sister Maggie. I have some pieces of fine lace that I keep in these two holders.

Hello Vet, this is just beautiful. I would also like to see some of your families fine lace. I have tried to learn lacemaking myself( my Aunt has talent in this area) and it is a real skill. Unfortunately I made knots but learned to respect lace on a whole new level.

Hi AmberRose and ma chere amie. I'm seeing mymother tomorrow and I'll check if she still has any of Maggie's work. My doilies are just some that I've picked up around the traps. These days I don't use them. I'll pull them out and take some pics. Thanks again for the kind comments.

Hi Esther, Amber Rose and sc/p!
I'm surprised you have not seen them before. Here in Oz they are fairly common. They were mainly done in 'poker-work' aka 'pyrography'.
Have you seen my other one? I posted it two days earlier than this one.
It's more of a thirties one....very Margaret Preston!
