This compact is a recent addition to my growing compacts and cigarette cases. I've left the note that was sent with this purse which gives you some information. The compact is definitely hefty I would imagine carrying this around on your finger would have been painful at the end of the night. I've tested the cabuchons stones and they register high so I'm presuming they could be Sapphires. The case is in beautiful condition. My one question, was this compact made in Austro-Hungarian or France. The assay mark is French so therefore was it exported to Austro-Hungarian but it would have been after 1918 as that empire collapsed after the WW1. I'm confusing myself, lol, especially with the piece of paper inside.
Many thanks for looking.
Nice one!
From the writing, I understand it bears the French "charançon" (weevil) import mark.
So it was imported to France :-)
I can't figure out why it bears too an Austro Hungarian import mark...
These vanities are from the 1920's, so I'm as confused as you are ;-))
So it was imported to France. So it's definitely not from Austria or Hungary, I'll have another peep and see if there are anymore marks. Thank you kyra, if I find anything I'll upload photo.
OK, I've looked inside outside and these are the only marks I can find.
I see that the Austro - Hungarian hallmark retired in 1922.
What a beauty, very nice find Peasejean! :^)
Thank y0u billretirecoll, I appreciate your comment.
Beautifully made with the gilded interior and jewelled thumbpieces. I don't know about the marks, but can tell you about the round sprung fittings on the right hand side. They are for coins, and if this was British they'd be for sovereigns (one pound gold coin) and half-sovereigns. In Europe they'd be equivalent gold coins.
So it's a combination compact and coin purse also known as a sovereign case which makes it doubly collectible. Only a wealthy flapper could go out on the town with one of those on her hand!
Hi Paul, I really enjoyed reading your comment. I'm really pleased with this purse it is a beauty and it's in wonderful condition, it's hardly been used. I'm still trying find info but it still a elusive.
Many thanks
