I have a Century Model 43 camera. Sadly, I know very little about it. It was made in the early 1900's, but I'm not positive as to how early. It was passed down to me along with some from around the 60's-80's. I just wanted to share it somewhere where it might be seen and appreciated by many true fans of it. I think my dad would have loved that. Feel free to comment below with any more info about this camera.
Very nice . We have a Camera expert on site and hopefully he will see your post and help you out . Welcome to CW
Nice camera. I’ve always considered Century red-bellows folding cameras as a classic American design. I have several (not all) early catalogues and the No.43 appears from 1906 to 1910. It was listed as a “medium priced outfit.” (An “outfit” included the camera, one double plate holder, and leather side-by-side carrying case.)
Your camera looks like a 5x7 inch format model which would have sold for $33.00. The shutter is difficult to see but appears to be a No.1 Century Automatic model, which was available from 1907 to 1910 (and possibly beyond). The lens in the shutter was made by the Bausch & Lomb Optical Company.
This model has a rotating back and double-extension bellows. This means the front can be extended more than usual for making close-up images or using longer focal length lenses. When not fully extended, the small leather tabs with brass rings hook onto the body to support the bellows to keep from sagging.
You got the best expert on your camera and what a great description rniederman so much to learn on CW :-)
Wow! Thank you for the information. I'll try to get some clearer pictures of this later for fans of this camera.
