Here's my little collection of 4 generations worth of decommissioned license tags, originally issued for use on AR State owned trucks or other pieces of highway construction equipment. #2269 on the top is no doubt the oldest, I'm not sure about the exact order of the 3 below it but guess that #4560 came before #7691 or #3191. (the numbers are most likely *not* sequential among different styles of the tags, probably starting over with each) #2269 might date from as long ago as the 1940's (?) but it is hard to know, since these plates (being produced by the State, for the State) aren't dated, and don't really ever legally "expire", (thus needing "renewed", like those on our lowly citizen-owned vehicles) only being retired when whatever piece of equipment they are originally issued to is, itself, retired.
My thanks to Caperkid, buckethead, fortapache, officialfuel, and ttomtucker for the loves!
With a little further thought, I'm gonna go ahead and guess the correct order of these is likely 2269, 4560, 7691, and 3191.
2269, being labeled "Arkansas Highway Dept" is no doubt the oldest, they haven't called themselves that for a very long time. 4560 is interesting (compared to the others) in that its numbers are *not* embossed (but the AH&TD lettering *is*?) making me wonder if it might be from the late 1940's wartime. (???) 7691 with its silver background is (I believe) the series that would have followed the old black background series(s) during the +/-1960's/70's (?) until another black-background series supplanted them sometime closer to the end of the 1900's. Nowadays the current scheme is a white background with black embossed border and letters, though the black/white tags can still be spotted on older pieces of equipment from time to time.
