Magnificent Art Deco Batwomen Italian Carved Walnut Wood & Portobello Marble Table, circa 1925

The experts seemed puzzled on this table which I bought in 1990. Unfortunately I traded my 10 cent coke machine, also some big cash but I did want it so bad. The owner's son of the antique mall in Regina had brought it back from the Chicago area. It was a cold late January, and I received it February delivered. Several years ago I saw maybe 2 more online. However they did not have the mareble top, so they were not as nice. One even had a raised center where the marble should have been which did not look right.

The carving is robust and beautiful. Bat Women caryatids holding up the table top with a beautiful Italian marble inset top !!

Amazing, you really have amazingly beautiful things Phil!
I'd be jealous if I didn't have two children, a dog and my mom all living with me...I can tiptoe through the tulips rather easily by myself, but them...??? lol

Thanks philmac51, there is nothing Nouveau about this table. You would never see such a piece in any book out there. The bat women caryatids are pure art deco, like an art deco statue, each leg. Each of them have high heel shoes which are not nouveau. Look at the second photo.

The carving at the top sides of the table has an almost Chinese appearing cut to them.

I am amazed! We have this exact same table without the marble and I've searched for a long time to find any information on it. My father obtained this years ago and it has remained in my family ever since. It was his favorite piece. People have tried to buy it for years but it is very sentimental and would never be sold. Do you have any idea of value regarding insurance?
    24. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 7 years ago
The item is not that rare from what I have found and particularly in Chicago where I have seen a fail bit of them on auction through the years. I think you should hire an appraiser who may give an answer to you since we are not allowed to give values on this site. I believe the ones with the marble insert seem to hold the most value since some of the wooden top ones may be reproductions from what I have seen on the auction circuit.

I did see a recent sale of one of the tables with a marble top and it reached between
6-7 k at a sale in Toronto, but that was in 2009. They described it as Italian but I think it was made in America as that is where all the examples I have seen were at.
If I saw one again, I feel like I would bid on it as I now have 2 living rooms.

Thanks Hoot60 for the love. The table was worth the price I paid as I was offered over 7000 at auction in Toronto !~

the whole discussion is hard to follow art nouveau ??? , is this auctioned without arbescato evaluation ?, who is gonna insure this without provenance, who got the expertise worldwide
insurance is high it will grind you in a long time spread

and a strange assesment of Torontothe value IMO it is far to low
    33. apostata apostata, 2 years ago
you must have revalue this officialy, it must do much more then an offer of 7000 canadian dollars
    34. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 2 years ago
Thanks Aposta, it is hard to evaluate when prices for antiques have fallen so much in the last 10 years.
