Got the phone call from my hubby that a shelf of my pottery had come down while he was out. All gone! Cream of my pottery collection. Needless to say I was really upset. Years of thrift finds! Darling daughter to the rescue! My seven year old has made it her mission to fix all of my pieces. You can see the results of her work with the last Weller picture. My seven year old is not only working on her problem solving skills, but developing a love of old pottery as well. (silver lining) RIP cherished collection...

Oh no! I would be upset if my Fenton all broke! Will you be replacing it all?
    2. AmberRose AmberRose, 13 years ago
I would love to but this was two good decades of thrifting... I have been so intrigued by everyones Fenton collections that I might start something new. Although I don't think that I can get pottery out of my blood.

Think of all the collectors in Minot, ND or Joplin, MO. We are custodians of these treasures...for a while. Enjoy them, share them while you can!

I understand, Ive lost three pieces of carnival glass, one to the wind, one to slippery hands, and one to my dogs tail.... upsets me every time I think about it

It is terrible to lose a collection you have put together over the years . I kind of think like you; I don't think that I would be able to start over collecting the same thing again. You are blessed to have a daughter that wants to put everything back together for you ! Priceless ! I have d daughter(grown), who has always been involved with me and my collecting, following me to flea markets and yardsales, and has a great appreciation for collecting. Looks like your daughter will follow in your footsteps to ! Thanks for sharing, and good luck in the future !

Thrift Gypsy, my daughter is priceless. My son, who is four, has contributed to quite a bit of breakage, so I love him the same but keep him away from my collecting at the moment.
I seem to have moved to glass, scandinavian pottery, and 50/60s barware. Not planned, just happened.

That sounds good.... I usually keep my collecting to unbreakables as much as possible, due to the fact that I am kind of clumsy ! lol. Good luck with your future collecting. T.G.

If I think about specific pieces, it still makes me sad. However, it kind of broke me (no pun intended) out of a collecting rut and moved me on to new things, including our Scandinavian glass!
      But yes it does stink...

      You have a fantastic outlook!

My youngest son grabbed a low shelf of art glass, destroying three pieces-- two modern and a large piece of Kralik.

We kept the pieces in a bag for over a year and then threw it out. I had forgotten about it until I saw this post!

Brat, you are so sweet. Weller is a favorite but I haven't been as jazzed by pottery since I lost the ones I adored. That being said...if you see a piece of Weller for a couple of bucks at the thrift, snick it for me : ))

      Oh No, that's terrible.
Can you put some links here for names and marks, so I can look around here in Holland?

what you could do if unable to fix them is create a table top , using the broken pieces in a mosaic pattern. so in a way you will still have the pieces and have a practical reference to colours, patterns and shapes of your favourite collection maker.

Ughhhh this makes me sick... You've got me eyeing my own shelf now
I think its leaning to the left...

Time I think , for all of us to take a good look at how to keep collections safe and sound.
I am thinking of a glass cabinet. which will protect from dust, kids fingers and dog tails. Also check the that shelves are high enough out of reach of accidental knocking and secured enough to the wall so as not to shift and can take the weight of so many ceramics.

I am feeling your pain. I can also feel the pride for your daughter. This is second shelf collapse I have heard about in the last week or so. I think all of us are taking a good look. So sorry for your loss.

We are about to do some de-construction in our house. ( pulling out a built in bar mad out of brick...so ugly) and I know there will be vibrations ringing through the house. I am bubble wrapping EVERYTHING!!!!!

Grew up with Fenton across the bridge, is really abundant around here. Let me know if you are looking for anything in particular. Every auction has entire tables full.
