Therewasat…

Trying to find out any information I can on this crate.
I believe it's WWII, but have little facts on it.
The top is hand painted with Japanese characters as well as having a brass plate with a lot more writing on it. It has a khaki webbing handle on top as well as fasteners on hinges.
The inside flap has a paper label with all the characters in tact as well.
The interior of the box is divided into several sections.
One large square section, another smaller square section with some holes Which I'm guessing held some kind of instruments or components for the main device.
Then a large square with some sort of firm animal hair like material, with a very pungent odor, I'm guessing to protect some sort of delicate object.
I'm thinking either an ordinance charge or an optical piece.
Any help identifying this piece of history would be most appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
I am sure if you contacted Dan King and sent a picture of the writing , he could tell you what it says.
