This is a really interesting pair of acid etched vases by Loetz, ca. 1914, about the time of the Österreichischer Werkbund Exhibition. It is not known whether these were made for the exhibition, but there is a similarly decorated vase on display in Passau next to a vase by Josef Hoffmann. The color of the PMC vase is opal violet, and the pattern is different, but executed in exactly the same manner in gold against a background in the same texture. That vase is late Series II - 8000 series, so these are undoubtedly from the same time frame. I feel like they could be the work of a designer, say either Adolf Beckert or Hans Bolek (or even Josef Hoffmann). In any case, they are interesting to me because the design motifs are the same, but the vases are not identical. It is as if the etched elements on each one was drawn out by hand. More research is needed on this pair, but they are a very exciting addition to the collection.
