DC National Guard Gold Medals

Four DC National Guard Medals - all gold. In order, DC National Guard Distinguished Service Medal; DC National Guard Long and Faithful Service Medal w/25 year clasp; DC National Guard National Rifles Service Medal w/10 year clasp; DC National Guard National Rifles Service Medal w/5 year device. The National Rifles medals date from the 19th Century.

The National Rifles was founded as a Company-size unit in 1859, with first Commander Fraqcis B. Schaeffer. It lost it's "name" identity in the reorganization of 1893-1903 and became Company B of the 1st Regiment of Infantry, with Medal of Honor winner Colonel Cecil Clay Commanding. At the same time, the 2d Regiment of Infantry was also commanded by a Medal of Honor winner, Colonel M. Emmet Urell.
