    This piece arrived in the mail today. I'm not sure whether the box is original to the piece or not, but it's definitely old. I really like Dharuma statues. This looks like a roly poly, but it doesn't roll.

      I love your Daruma! It has tons of character, and one of the most interesting faces I've seen. It reminds me just a bit of Jonathan Winters :)

      The box is also lovely. I can't read most of the writing, but the 2 kanji characters written vertically, second from the right side, read to me as "okimono" (you can see the kanji in typed form here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okimono). As I'm sure you know, "okimono" means display ornament, and the word is often used for figurines like this one. So I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn this is indeed the box that came with your Daruma. I love this particular style as opening it always reminds me of pulling up the curtain at a theatre!
