This is an 1880s- 90s cabinet card that shows a railroad baggage handler.

Photographer is Schellhous out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I really like the large, flat top trunk at his side.

Any information on the makers/ years of the trunk is appreciated.

By the looks of the leather straps its old. This is a snip-it from HMS antique trunks site regarding metal latches and leather straps. hope it helps...it has certainly helped me. Jim has a great deal of helpful trunk dating tips on his site under his "Trunk FAQs & Trunk Myths" section.
      Latches or leather straps.
Trunk latches were not in general use until 1872. Any trunk with latches was made after 1872. The strap, and dowel pin method (a leather strap, and buckle like a belt, and a dowel pin used to keep the lid from shifting side to side) was used prior to 1872, and even a little while after. (probably to deplete inventory)

This postcard makes me think of my grandfather, he worked for Wells Fargo in the late 1890's to around 1910 riding on the railroad. My brother has his stamped US 1872 45 revolver, he bought it for 2 bits at the company store. He always laughed about it because it had one notch on the handle when he bought it. He said that guy couldn't have been to good to only have one notch.

Thanks dlpetersen-- glad this brought back memories for you. The image is actually called a cabinet card. The format pre- dates postcards by about 35 years.

Lovely pic! The trunk may have been a zinc covered trunk from the 1880’s. Style wise, the shorter leather straps were often found on these types of trunk more so than other types.
