I was surprised no one bid on it: while bulky, heavy, and typically used for camping, I thought it looked neat and could have great use (so, I was the only bid). It is a porcelain-lined Landers, Frary, & Clark Universal gallon jug: patent 1917, still offered in a 1961 boater's catalog. It appears that they made another jug patent in 1926. There is offered as the "Stratosphere jug" in 1945 a chromium-plated jug marketed for flying as their improved model was supposed to keep constant pressure. This one comes with several fold-out handled aluminium bowls, one of which is also the screw-cap. The main plug (which is itself plugged with a hard rubber knob on a screw) is full of what looks like cork bits and something else, interestingly enough. At first I thought it was meant to hold pepper. Hah hah. There appears to be a newer model with a spout.
That's really cool SpiritBear! :^D My wife just got me a new 40oz Thermos, to replace my old 1quart size, my father got it in 1970, and in 1977, it was given to me, when I started working as a Carpenter, and my father got a new one, for his Birthday. It still works great, dented and covered with Union stickers, but I guess my wife felt that I needed a new one to hold my coffee, on the kitchen counter??!!! Well, when she gave it to me I thanked her, and asked her what was wrong with mine? Then said, It's probably made in China now!, and sure enough it is! The thing, and company, that I thought, was a great American product, and producer, is now made in China. I guess it was made too good, and lasted too long! My bad! Should have bought one more often, and put the others in a land fill! :^( Maybe I'll post my Family Heirloom, and the new one! :^D Thanks for posting SpiritBear! :^)
Well, Bill, that is an interesting gift. At least it's useful. I always prefer glazed earthernware containers for their high sanitation. Had this been metal inside, I'd not have bought it. I'm sure yours is lighter: this thing is fairly heavy even when empty.

what a wonderful piece! reminds me of my great grand-pepere!
My family lived in New Britain and worked off and on at LF&C from the early 1910's through the 1950's.
We have this jug...the graphics and base plate seem to be missing but it has been in use for over 85 years and is brought out to family gatherings. We also have sleeves of paper cups from ther paper Goods company also based in NB.
