Would anyone recognize this person? It was found years ago by my parents in the attic of an old house. and put away since. It probably would have been from Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa I'm not sure of the medium used. The small card behind the glass in the lower right hand corner looks like it might be a crude photograph. In it, he might be wearing a military jacket. Can't tell. I wonder why it is there. I thought I'd run it past this forum before taking it apart for clues. The paper backing is fragile and torn. Would removing this hurt its value? Can't seem to correct rotation when posting shots on Collectors Weekly, even if I do so before uploading them Apologies. Thanks for looking at this.

      Nice pair of photographs.

No one famous that I recognize, just a pair of 19th century portraits.

The smaller one looks like a carte de visite (cdv) and probably has faded over time. The back of the cdv may have photographer information (name and city/ state).

The larger image looks to be a copy photo/ enlargement of the cdv. The most popular size was a 16 X 20. Often the enlargement lost details during the process and the details would be added to the photograph giving a painted portrait look. Yours, with the dark (black and gray) detail work, is often referred to as a charcoal portraits by collectors.

Finally had the nerve to take the back off. It is of Joseph Hein from Adrian, Nobles Co., MN. Dated 1870. For "Anna" He was a Private with the 8th Heavy Artillery in NY State during the Civil War. Would love to contact Hein family genealogists.
