Except there's five of 'em instead, they don't 'squeak' when squeezed, and they have numbers written on their undersides in black sharpie. BUT THEY STILL LOOK CUTE sitting on the bathroom windowsill, don't they??! ;-) :-) ;-) :-)
These were found 'loose' and 'unpriced' on the shelves at Goodwill recently -- when I took them to the register to ask for a price, the clerk mentioned that "there was a big binful of those a few days ago, but somebody bought the whole thing". [presumably these five 'got loose' in the meantime?] Anyway, he remembered that they had been priced 6pc for a dollar -- I said "close enough, a buck it is, SOLD?!" :-)
With that story plus the sharpie marker numbers, I believe they probably came from a 'carnival game duck race' kind of thing -- where the carnies ultimately make money when people (wrongly) guess which numbered duck gets to the end first. (or something like that...?) They're hollow, made of flexible molded plastic with the words MADE IN CHINA in the mold mark.
In the area where I live, at least one charity organization hosts a huge duck race every year. They spend a month or so selling ducks--you pay about $20-$25 per duck--a number gets assigned to you and your duck (s). On the big day, with a lot of fanfare, an enormous number of rubber ducks are released to float down river in the current. Several miles downstream is the finish line. The prize for the first duck to arrive is usually a new car donated by one of the many local dealerships. Subsequent ducks arriving are awarded lesser prizes, but all nice stuff, donated by local businesses. It's a huge fund raiser. I've bought a few ducks myself over the years but they always lagged behind so I never won a thing!
You probably have some stragglers from the river or maybe the entire flock was donated to your thrift store after the race.
I am embarrassed to say I don't have either a rubber duckie or a rubber chicken in my pile of stuff. How did this happen?
When Whacky Jacky left for Berlin, she got me to buy her a rubber ducky. The one she choose didn't look like these, at all. Said she had trouble finding a good ducky over there. Maybe I lost something in the accent.

I used to stay at a hotel in Staunton, VA on business. They'd put a complimentary rubber duck, just like these, in the bathrooms. A lot of folks collected these to see how many they could collect. I stayed their many time and had quite a few of these.

Watchsearcher, you could be correct, I've heard of 'rubber duck races' like you describe too, just not around here that I know of recently. Not that they haven't happened...there's lots of rivers (and local carnivals/festivals/etc) around here too...?
kwqd, no reason to be embarrassed. I myself still don't own a rubber chicken...I also don't quite know why not, now that I think of it...?

JScott, I doubt I've stayed in that same hotel in Staunton (?) but I *have* stayed in one other, somewhere or other over the yrs, where I also found another little rubber duckie as a 'welcome' item in the shower...I need to go find that little guy andadd him to the lineup too, now that you reminded me of him...
OH -- I almost forgot -- the other thing the store clerk reported while I asked about my 5 'loose ducks' was that, apparently, the person that bought the "whole big bin full" of all the rest of them intended to use them to stage a 'duckie invasion' to somebody else's home (for whom that buyer was apparently 'house-sitting' during their vacation?) by scattering them throughout, for that homeowner to discover upon ultimately returning home.
Now, I both regret that I didn't get there in time to buy the whole binful, AND that I don't have "friends" like that...? <LOL>
Awwwwww......yeah, I would think a river charity Duck race as they have did something like here to raise money. Lovely Ducks !!
