van der Ploeg? Several artists by that name are currently active. Might also be van der Pleg, Plag, etc...., but I didn't find any artists by that name.
Good painting. Is on a board or canvas? What are the dimensions of the painted surface? An image of the back would be nice....
Hi kwqd,
Thank you kindly for your info. The painting is on board. I have 2 images of the back of painting. One without frame and one with. The dimensions of the picture without frame is 7 1/4" w x 5" ht. With frame 13" w x 10 1/2" ht.
Thanks lisa1218! If that is the board it is painted on, then, based on the oxidation, it probably has some age to it, unless someone reused an old board. Kind of looks like plywood from what I can see... It looks pretty clean, too, as though it may have been recently cleaned or has just been well protected.
My husband purchased it at a flea market in Corning, Arkansas. He was told that it came from an estate sale in St. Louis, Missouri. We haven't had anything done to it. Sure would like to know who the artist is. Looks like there are many artist with the name Van Der Ploeg. Hope we can solve this mystery. We love the painting though. Thanks for all your help!
Regards,
Lisa
I am going to up load another picture of the back for you to look at. Thanks
Wow. Thanks for the other images of the board. Not seen that type of board before. I still think it is plywood or perhaps something cut from a crate, etc. I've seen artists, even accomplished, successful artists paint on all types of surfaces, so it is just interesting, in this case. Many accomplished artists struggle financially and have to use whatever materials they can afford. The type of surface artists paint on can be a clue to their identity, nationality, etc. Not in this case, though the wood backing does look a bit like wood that I have seen on Indonesian paintings. The numbers may be a clue. They could be numbers from the artist's cataloging system, date, number in a series, etc., which might help if you find a similar system on other works. All I can really say is that in my opinion it is the work of an accomplished artist, not an amateur, who makes good use of light, shadow, proportion, movement and perspective. I can't really make a good guess on age, but maybe, very broadly, 1930s-1960s. Just a pure gut feeling. The frame could also be a clue as to age (of the frame) but that is not something I am accomplished at doing, in general. It is a bit of an odd sized painting surface, not quite 5" x 7", so it could be a custom frame. Now I am just rambling...
Hi Kwqd,
Thank you for all your input and information. You have been very helpful, and I sure appreciate you taking your time to answer my questions.
Regards,
Lisa
You are welcome, Lisa. One last thing. Assuming the writing verso is by the artist, the horizontal line through the number "7" indicates a European origin, not American. Sometimes done in Latin America, too, so Suriname, Aruba, Dutch Antilles also a possibility for a "van der" name..
Best,
Kevin
The signature is exactly the same as Niek van der Plas signed his paintings. So it's not Nick van der Plas but can it be Niek van der Plas?
Wat denk je, Ren..... eh sorry Yop? Hahahaha
like i stated before , they deleted the comments this is a real one , Nicolas van der Plas , the bar is above the word van , and and the stacked lumps of butter to the right of the center are beach chairs, probably Katwijk scene, so this is real value !
by the way the credits go to mister Kunst, i was just the blind squirrel who finded a nut
