Normally I am most definitely "arachnophobic". Even though I've never had any huge problem with most any other bugs/snakes/rodents/etc (unless they're unexpectedly 'in the house'?) I've *always* recoiled from spiders -- don't know why offhand, and don't really care either -- it just "is". ;-) :-)
The key to that thought is 'if they stay outside, in their own environment'... ;-) Which brings me to introduce y'all to "Frank" here, who has taken up residence at a corner of my carport for the past few days, over the gate and under the light to my backyard patio. Frank seems to be just the most recent kinda large (and probably well fed at the moment?) typical "garden spider" that has politely (if mistakenly) enough chose to build his home outside of mine like he should have. THUS, he will survive mostly undisturbed until a bird (or some other bigger critter?) gets him, or I otherwise actually need to open that gate... ;-)
The pics don't really show how colorful/pretty he is (even if shaped as a dreadfully unpleasant thing) mostly because of the artificial ambient lighting -- he is actually an assortment of various orangey-brown colors reminiscent of a calico cat. 1st pic is as close as I was willing to get to him...2nd pic more shows how big he's spun his web (in relation to the door/etc) and the 4th (w/camera flash) shows his web better.
OH, and for the record, I name/gender all the garden spiders that occasionally show up 'hanging around' my carport "FRANK"... ;-) :-)

I get the arachnophobia! i find all animals and insects fascinating and i never get creeped out by anything except SPIDERS! i've had them crawling on me one too many times. as Newfld says though - nice web!

Frank and I send our thanks out to valentino97, Johnsmith, fortapache, Newfld, Anik, kyratango, & iggy for the <love its> and to kyratango, ho2cultcha, & Newfld for your kind comments! I totally agree w/ya Newfld -- he did a spectacular job with his web, more picturesque than most. Pity he actually did anchor it (at several places) onto the top edge of the gate itself...Kyra, that's why I inadvertently only got pics of his undersides I guess. It didn't even occur to me until you mentioned it, but he *is* hanging on the 'outside' of the web, so I can't get pics of his topside without actually opening the gate, which would wreck the whole bottom of all his work... :-(

lol we get a ton of barn spiders ,my wife would say dont kill them they eat bugs.. ...and i would said not only that but the barn swallows eat them as well...smiling, cool pictures ..

I didn't even think about upcoming halloween (should have, I guess?!) only having first noticed him and how accidentally (but perfectly) he'd displayed himself. Couldn't help but to think he deserved the 'photo-op' at least.
Then last evening while starting a load of laundry (wash machine is behind that door) I got to watch him 'rebuilding' part of his web. Absolutely FASCINATING to see him going round and round from 'spoke' to 'spoke', and the way he used all his (way too many!!) legs/etc to do so. An added bonus was when a small moth caught the wrong breeze and got snared -- in a flash, Frank had it captured and being wrapped into an immobile little ball. CREEPY yes, but kinda COOL too...?? (and once more -- ONLY if somewhere outside...?!!)
Today's update: some other critter might have finally got him -- he's been AWOL all day. If he doesn't show up again tonite, I'll take the broom to what's left of his web tomorrow so's I can have my backyard gate back... <lol>
