i have no idea what this is. it has a felt on wood base, enameled and gilt metal top, and the rolltop appears to be ivory or maybe enamel as well?

I haven't seen one of these since I was a kid. I don't know the official use but my great grandmother put jewelry in it and kept it on her bed stand. She also had a wind up alarm clock with the same roll top.
