This is an original Type-1 photo of Babe Ruth at the Dover Well Hunting Club in Georgia. I have a letter of authenticity from a daughter-in-law of Christie Walsh, who was the Babe's personal business manager from 1921-1935. She states that it came from Walsh's personal collection of photos. I researched the Dover Well Hunting Club and it was a spot in the early to mid 1920s where many baseball players and sports writers would go to let loose in the fall and winter. They would go hunting and fishing among many other outdoor activities. I guess it was just a huge party with a lot of drinking and eating in large quantities. I found out in my research that Babe Ruth shot a cow that he thought was an elk.
The photo is of Babe Ruth pumping the artesian well that was on the property. The Babe smokes a pipe, although the write-up on the back says he was "training." Training in his own way I suppose. Dogs, trees and a white fence are shown in the background.
Enjoy and feel free to offer up any other info. Thanks!
Fabulous keepsake & rare photo of the Babe, thanks for sharing
