I specialize in growing manzanitas at my nursery where i grow 66 different kinds. There are something like 175 manzanita species in the world, and all but 5 of them are found only in California. Members of the Ericaceae family, they are related to azaleas, rhododendrons, and blueberries. Here are some wild ones i saw the other day on Cedar Mountain near Livermore. About 18 yrs ago, i found the largest manzanita known on the other side of this mountain. It was 36 ft tall with a trunk 6 ft around. Beautiful unusual curvy trees
Stop by here and get some from the lot next to me. They do have a slight tendancy to be highly flammable under the right conditions. But they can be beautiful. Some look like bushes and some look like the ones in your photos. I have a few on my property that look quite nice although they need a bit of trimming now and then. My biggest one was a huge bush until I cut away most of the foliage. I'll take some photos of them tomorrow and post them. They are a bit like bonsai trees although some just grow that way on their own.

Thank you Thomas, Anik, Newfld, fortapache, and Mrstyndall! i do really love manzanitas. Some are groundcovers - short as a carpet, while others are trees, and everything in between. i'll post some with flowers now.
