Anyone who was into drag racing back then knew the real rivalry was between Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme but Hot Wheels though a Tom The Mongoose McEwan Don The Snake Prudhomme rivalry would be better. Thus the Mongoose and Snake funny cars sponsored by Hot Wheels. I think that started in 1970. Yep 1970. In 2018 these transport sets came out one for each the Snake and Mongoose. This one says it is 72 Barracuda but it looks more like the 197 to me. Hard to say as Funny Cars have a fiberglass shell body so it isn't exact. The new ones are so stylized it is hard to tell what they are supposed to be.
I think the transport truck is a 1970 Ford with some nifty running lights. The Snake model is much more detailed than the original or other funny car models. Details such as the wheels bars and head and tail lights which as with the original are just painted on.
With luck there may be a Saturday Evening Scout post tomorrow.
Oh yeah! I can still see Pam lining up Don at the starting line...LOL
I remember the Hot Wheels Snake/Mongoose commercials well. Drag racing had a following with Garlits, etc. already, but this rivalry opened the floodgates to make the NHRA a MAJOR league ticket to a whole new fan base. Superb detail. Hot Wheels were after my time but I always liked looking at them over the years. I'm no expert on them but this is the most intricate one I've seen! Cool set all around with the colors, wheels, etc.
Oops I had that wrong it was jungle Jim that had jungle Pam line him up back in the day.
Thank you very much EJW-54. Yep that was Jungle Jim. I have a model of his car too.
Thank you very much Toyrebel. I saw Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme face off at Bakersfield. Prudhomme's engine blew at the starting line ad Don Garlits sped off to a 50mph victory. Rather a let down. Jungle Jim would have torn up the track. And yes super detail.
