"A Clear Conscience" miniature painting by French Artist Vincent Jean Baptiste Chevilliard (1841-1904).
The Artist specialized in genre scenes and well known for depicting religious personages in sophisticated way with delicate sense of humor. Oil on wood panel; signed lower right.
Measures without frame - height 4 1/4"; width 3 1/2" (11.3 x 9.4 cm). With the frame 11 1/2" x 12" (29.7 x 30 cm).
Jean Baptiste Chevilliard was admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1865 and studied under François Edouard Picot (1786-1868), Tirnelli and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He debuted his work An Invalid Woman the same year at Salon.
His works are held at museums in Semur-en-Auxios (The Chemin de la Belle-Marie at Barbizon, in Winter), Stockholm (The End of Lent) and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among others.
