I like to collect examples of the local fauna. This is probably the most numerous of the carnivores here although it is a bit of an omnivore. There are some molar like teeth in the back of the jaw. Looks pretty much like a dog's jaw as far as the teeth go. The skull does not have the narrow snout of the canines. The shape of the skull is catlike but with dog-like teeth.
The skull is about 5" long. The size of a small dog but much more dangerous. They can hold their own against a coyote.
On summer night I like to sit on my deck in the peace and quiet. Until a pair of racoons try to kill each other that is. Quite the sound.
I have hours of trail-cam videos of raccoons ravaging some bird feeders I had hanging from a tree. They are so determined and industrious, it’s impossible to outsmart them when food is involved!
It was always fun to check the videos after I would find the feeders wrecked, askew, torn down and totally empty. There was always several raccoons working as a team, some on the ground and at least one up on the feeders doing whatever it took to get to the food and knock it to the ground.
Thank you very much keramikos. That is an adorable racoon.
Thank you very much Watchsearcher. They haven't gotten to my bird food yet. I think it is racoon birthing season now. They new crop should be running around in June.

I would not want to tangle with one either. They can certainly stand their ground and make any potential predictor sorry they went to the trouble of trying to get a raccoon!
On our trail cam, we saw one with the group one night which had no tail. Since they stayed till they had eaten all they wanted, I got a good view of him (or her) from all sides and there was no sign of a tail. I wondered if he was born that way or lost it in some violence.
I think he may have been rejected as a baby if he had been born different like that, but I’m no animal behavior buff.
I do know they eat everything left outside and foul the cat’s water with food debris.
I’m so nutty...didn’t mean to submit twice!
keramikos I have had the pleasure of listening to racoons fight many times. When I go out see what is happening I expect to see blood, guts and something dead but apparently they sound worse then they are.
I have heard about Cheetah. Johnny used to slug Cheetah hard to show who is boss. Luckily that was a young chimp as an adult would be almost impossible to handle.
Watchsearcher I saw a tail impaired racoon the other night. My guess is some sort of violence. My cats are not allowed out but I do toss garbage out and something gets it. If I put it in the trash I get trash everywhere. Even freezing garbage doesn't work.

Thank you Trey.
I raised two raccoons from babies and kept them as pets. I have to say that they made wonderful pets! They were very intelligent and used to get into a lot of trouble however.
Thank yopu very much vintagelamp. Seems they did like to get into trouble like burrowing through a wall.
Thank you stuff.
