Vintage Model 27 Singer Sewing Machine. Fairly good condition, some functions work, could possibly be functional with proper care and pieces. Cannot find any information as to the origin or date of the model. Multiple serial number data bases do not identify the model! Mystery as to the year.

    Unsolved Mystery

Thank you for your response Keramikos. Unfortunately I also read the same article prior to posting. There are no secondary serial numbers on the sewing machine (underneath or on the sides). I do remember reading that some of the log books were lost on the pre-1900 models. It's just tough to justify calling this a pre-1900 model or even earlier without any other identifying serial numbers. I am open to other ideas as to how to go about identifying the year if anyone has any other ideas!

Just working my way through old CW S&T posts that have Singer no-prefix serial numbers, because the ISMACS team has been working on a project to flesh out the information on them.

With regard to this one, the ISMACS team said (information in brackets my edit):

"The Singer 27-Class, Sphinx decals [serial number 011090], has been a mystery since at least 2019 when it appeared for sale on eBay. Singer began to use factory prefixes in 1900, but there are a few "0" serial numbers without prefix that may have been part of a transition. The SingerCo serial number tables on the SingerCo website, until a few years ago, stopped at 16831099 for 1899, but we've come across at least a couple SerNos higher than that, still in the 16,000,000s, and possibly [if read correctly] one in the 18,000,000s. We've also come across a few "leading-zero" SerNos without prefixes, possibly early 1900 while Singer was standardizing the prefix system at its factories in the US (including the one in Montreal, Canada under the US serial numbers) and the UK."

So, unfortunately, as of 20241202, this one remains a mystery. :-(
