This is a tool that was found when we were having a yard sale to sell our deceased parents belongings. We chose not to sell it because of the mystery behind the unknown. By pulling on the little trigger at the top you can retract and release the little spike things at the bottom. Nobody seems to know what it is or what it would be used for, we have had a couple of ideas from people but not sure, one said it looked like a tool used for moving hay bales and another said it looked like something you would tie a horse to to shoe it, however, there are no pound marks on the top of it like it was pounded into the ground, we would like to find out the answer and even a value of some sort if possible. I hope you can shed some light on this for us.
It is a hay bale spear. So you can lift bales to the loft when its farther than you can pitch 'em.
Thank you, I did find that out a couple of days after I posted these pictures, we have an antique dealer here in our town and I took a chance and went and showed him and he told told me the same thing. I did some research on it and it was made in the late 1890's, early 1900's and weighs about 14 pounds. All I can say is with the weight of that I would not want to be throwing hay around as well.
