Picked this up at the June Long Beach Flea Market and looks like this was my best buy. There are not a whole lot of these around. My research shows this to be a WWII era Marine Corps Military Police (MP) armband the 1/1 version. It is very similar to the US Army MP armband but this one is "M.P." instead of "MP".
It is made of wool and has a brass hook along with three brass reinforced holes for attaching to the arm. See figure 3 as the boy scout is now a marine kind of. Looks like I need to work on a full uniform for an MP. This is also called a brassard, the armband that is.
Wrapping it up is GI Joe wearing an MP armband. Note that the armband that is the subject of this post is the full sized eal thing.
That is meaningful to me. My father was an army MP during WW II. He was stationed in New Orleans. The post was Camp Leroy Johnson right next to Lake Ponchartrain. Thanks for sharing.
Aren't marines SP ?
In my time SP's were Navy shore patrol.
Marines aren't still navy ?
Marines never were actually Navy, they are a separate branch of the military which is overseen by the department of the Navy.
Thank you very much Toyrebel. Happy to share it.
bb2 and fhrjr2. The USMC may have MPs but they still have a brig. The Navy and Marines a complicated relationship.
Thank you
