CanCollector showed his nifty small NATIONAL cash register a few days ago and got me thinking again about mine... ;-)
Pictured here as it currently waits patiently in my storage for reassembly/repair/restoration, what y'all are looking at is the *very heavy* iron/steel chassis and mechanisms that make up the 'guts' of the machine. Its exterior brass (bronze?) case pieces and glass/marble parts are stored separately, the box they are in probably weighs just about as much by itself...~75-100 lbs ea? Last pic here is its cash drawer front, (17-1/4" x 3") which is the only brass bit I've ever got back out of that box because it looks fun as a "wall decoration" too... <lol>
If I'm interpreting its label info correctly, it is a "Class 300" machine, serial #788572, sold in IL on 12-14-[19]09. Capable of ringing up to $69.99, it also includes a receipt printer mechanism on its RH side.
It became "mine" as of 1969/70 or so, when my family moved into a new house where the previous owners had left it behind in the basement. As a ~5-6 yr old kid then, it proved a way-fun playtoy...eventually I even tried (kinda) to polish it up, until realizing how much **work** it really was to do that...? <lol> Sometime back then I also managed to get something 'jammed up' within its mechanisms (if in fact it wasn't always that way?) but haven't ever since tried to explore what/why. I also have at least some of its original keys. :-) What I know I don't have is one of the two small brass brackets which held the glass over its number tags at the top, and the wooden base the whole thing sat on -- those pieces were already gone even back then. If it ever had a 'top sign' that's long gone too.
If (and when?) I ever get around to trying to fix it/put it back together, it'll look quite a bit like this one shown by another CW member RAD211289 here:

The wife and I were going up to her Mothers in Bangor maine back in the 70's we stopped at an auction in Wiscasset and they had a huge National Brass register in a wheelbarrow like yours!!! The first 25 bucks takes it!!!I wanted to buy it the wife says where are we going to put it??? We had a 76 Plymouth Scamp!!! I always mention it to her every time I see one!!!

Everybody has their favourite trick oil, but I've found Marvey Mystery oil to work wonders on things like this. It dissolves old oil varnish & sludge. Also good with beer, if you drink the beer separately.

If I'm interpreting it correctly, it seems like your finish might have been C:

Brass/Bronze Finish – Letter C
These machines are solid brass which can be polished to a beautiful reddish gold color. Polish or buff with Brasso or have it done professionally and lacquered. Lacquering will delay tarnishing.
Uncoated bronze will tarnish slowly to a nice patina like any brass object.
