Dietz Lanterns started making lanterns in Hong Kong in 1956 and ended in 1982. The stickers on this lead me to believe it is from a bit later in the period. Knew this going in but liked it and the price so here it is. It will look good hanging outside.
In photo #3 it can be seen that it is half the size of a normal lantern.
I thought there was a rock inside but as I attempted to dump it out it turns out to be an old wasp nest which broke apart a bit. There is still a larvae in there along with some leftover wasps. They probably ran into a can a bug spray.

There was kind of a retro "fad" for kerosene lanterns in the 50's. I remember see the small size lanterns in stores. The battery operated lanterns were popular kid toys in the 50's, everybody had one. I had a Deluxe Reading Fire Dept. set, the ones displayed on the top of grocery store shelves that could be ordered. It had a ladder truck, pumper, a fire fighter helmet and a battery operated lantern?! I think this illustrates the popularity of the lanterns, a kerosene lantern is one of the last things I would carry into a fire. I have NO idea what prompted the lantern popularity. That era was the hey-day of westerns which had the lanterns in them sometime, maybe that had something to do with it. Every kid was running around with coonskin caps and lanterns, weird but a very fun time to be a kid. I wish I still had that fire set(well I wish I had all my toys) it came in the display box instead of the common shipping box. It had a great picture background of a building on fire.

These little guys had a good following among those of us who fished at night. They not only provided low light but the fumes kept the insects away.

Thank you very much Toyrebel. A lot of good information there. Kerosene lanterns are popular up here due to frequent power outages. Seem to be brighter than the smokeless ones.

Thank you very much fhrjr2. Reminds me I need more kerosene that may help keep the bugs away here at night.
