Let me first say that burning is tedious, time consuming it teaches you patience. So basically, I’m copying what was tooled into the leather originally on the trunk.Give or take a few lines. I use a hand burning kit that cost around $25. I really only use one or two tips that I like.
It requires sanding the wood completely first with the grain. Then drawing in pencil what ever you wish to burn. A ruler is helpful. There are light burns and heavy burns. The harder you press & and the longer you keep it there the deeper the burn. It is unforgiving, and quite permanent. It adds depth, & texture immediately to the wood surface. No such thing as an eraser so be careful for those wishing to give it a try. Periodically clean the brass burning tip with sandpaper or steel wool. A small metal straight edge can at times be helpful to guide the burner or just freehand it.The most important thing is doing it outside or a well ventilated area with a good sized fan on you taking the smoke away.
One thing that I have found is that stain doesn’t really travel through the burned surface. Especially gel stain. This allows me to use an artist brush to add different coloring effects etc. I used a 1/4 artist brush with both the the stains ,shellac and painted surfaces.
So much luck to those that would give it a try.
Get good on a piece of scrap wood first.

Thanks for all the kind words. It really is just something that I enjoy doing. Incidentally , When I finally complete this trunk, I’m giving it away to one of my Drill Sgts. that served in Afghanistan.
