I saw this Working RR Crossing sign listed for Sale on Facebook yesterday and since it was local figured I would add it to the Lakeside Museum Collection. I think it’s probably the 60s-70s vintage but it looks cool at the entrance and lights blink when the gate is opening or closing. I didn’t hook up the working Bell as that would be pretty obnoxious to the managers that live onsite as well as the neighbors at the RV Park across the street. It was very heavy for an old guy almost 80 to load and haul alone!
I’m so glad you save all these old things!! Thank you!!
Watchsearcher,
Old people like old things and we don’t throw things away. If u grew up poor u learned to save, repair, Patch, and do without and be happy.
Believe it or not this type crossing signal is still in use here in Florida on side roads. Trains don't pass through daily anymore but when they do day or night I hear the whistle blast. They stopped blowing the whistle for years because of residents complaining at 2 AM. Then there was a fatal accident 3 or 4 years ago and they figured blowing the whistle was cheaper than putting in drop down barriers. So we are back to the good old days.
Fhrjr2,
I love the air whistles but if I lived near the tracks I wouldn’t! We just had a huge Steam Engine come and visit Provo and it ran its whistle at the Crossing s and people hated it. We used to try and get engineers to sound the whistles when we drove across country and occasionally they would and it thrilled us little kids!
Fhrjr2,
We mostly have the drop gates but in the Country we still hear the whistles blow near the road crossings in Utah. Great fun for kids!
I WANT ONE ! I thought the only real railroad in my area was 900 miles away in Jamaica. Would luv to have one to put on the road in front of my place ! Thought about it for yrs.. Out of curiosity, I searched. They now have a rail in The Dominican Republic. Isn't that a relief now ? Any of us can now travel by rail (most of the way) from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo. (Sigh of relied). Actually I flip thru the D.R. every once in awhile & would luv to ride it.
Blunderbuss2,
It’s good to hear u again. Been a long while since u commented on my junk pile. Glad I could finally find something that moved your juices. For me the signals and signs are a reminder of the early days of the Steamers and Whistles and black coal smoke that I can still smell just talking about it. Have a good day.
Officialfuel,
Thx for the love it
Rattletrap -- I'd be curious to see another pic of the backsides of the lights/bell to be able to know their maker -- also curious what sort of lights/flasher now work it...?? I've managed to collect *most* of the parts of a similar vintage WRRS setup for my own backyard, now really only missing a pole/base to bolt everything up to... <lol>
AnythingObscure,
Suggest u contact us at aaaLakeside Storsge in Provo Ut and someone can send u pix of anything u want and make it a lot easier for u.
All Aboard !!!:)
Trey.
Hard to find em all together like this one, but I am dealing on another Cats Eye sign up North. It’s just not complete like this. And pricier, of course
