I found this object yesterday. It's cast of something extremely heavy. it feels like lead when i lift it. It's a cool sign for the nursery though. we love everything oaklandish! i love the modern / art deco typeface.

It looks like someone poured lead into a metal pan, cooled it, dumped it out and carved the name. Lead is very soft but also very heavy. About 59 pounds a cubic foot but it melts at just over 600 degrees F. It carves really easily. I keep 20 or 30 pounds of it around to melt and use as needed although I prefer medical lead because it is more pure with less slag. Nuclear medicine comes stored in lead capsules and usually has only a 30 day half life so is easy to get.

thanks fhrjr2. this isn't lead. it's much harder than lead, but extremely heavy. it looks like concrete but heavier and there's some kind of fiber in there too. ??

Hey fhrjr2, 1 cubic foot of Lead weighs 708 pounds, you're just a little light! :^D

Nice find Pete, one of these days I'll get over there to visit you, and see that Oakland Sign in person! Thanks for showing! :^)
