Back in the mid/late 1950s, there was local promotion in our town for having a “professionally made” silhouette- for a fee, of course. I think there was a limited time for the service so I’m thinking that the silhouette artist may have traveled town to town.

My multitalented mother wanted silhouettes of my sister and me but didn’t have money to spend on something that frivolous so she made them herself.
I remember sitting very still while a light she rigged up on one side of me caused my shadow on a piece of white paper she had taped to the wall. She drew around the shadow, cut a template, then used the template to cut my silhouette from black paper.

She framed the silhouettes and was understandably very proud of them. About 60 years later, they were still in my dad’s Army footlocker the last time I saw them.
