I purchased this monk stein a couple of years ago at a local antique store, and I am would like to know if anyone can tell me anything about it. I have not seen one even remotely similar, and believe me, I have searched high and low! It is simply marked "Germany" on the bottom, but it is very well painted, and it appears to be fairly old from the patina of the pewter. He is just precious, and I fell in love with him the minute I saw him!

      Gerd Georg, Just now
Hello, I is able to do no English, this is why I write only briefly. A very nice jug you have there. Age: so about 1900-1920
      Price: certainly some hundred euros.
Where the jug was produced I cannot say. Yours sincerely Gerd

This is one of a set of what we call "roly poly' steins. I think they werer made by a collective of manufacturers in Hohr-Grenshausen circa 1885-1900.

It should have a 4 diget numbrer incised in the bottom and has sold for $150 - $300 over the past 30 years in the 3 major US commercial stein auctions.
It may have gusted higher because for some of us purchases are FAR too emotional. I am one of these fools.

The actual factory makes no difference but my thinking today is leaning towards Reinhold Merkelback. I could get out my books, etc and be more precise but ............. if you like it, you could learn more and if you soldit, who cares?

Old Collector...Thanks for the info. I was curious also, it is a great little mug. Your line, "you could learn more and if you soldit, who cares?" is AWESOME. I like you, already !

Thank you for the info. I am not interested in selling because I just fell in love with him! He makes me smile every time I look at him! If you have more info, I would greatly appreciate it, such as was the set all monks or different characters?
