Vietnam Air Cavalry

Found this in my attic. I got it many years ago from a vets father and forgot all about it. It ended up in Edinburgh Scotland of all places. The vets son was a Hospital Consultant and moved to Edinburgh from California.The insignia depicted on it are unit attributed so I won;t go too deeply into that but the read & white flag design is the likeness of the pocket badge worn by members of the D/1/10 Cavalry Aero Weapons , or gun platoon. The other is, as indicated, for the Scout platoon. There has to be quite a story behind that. I would suppose he was either a pilot or crewman who served in both platoons at some point and received the helmet as a parting gift when he concluded his tour, or possibly he had it made or made it himself when he got back home. That fact that it is a steel helmet rather than a flight helmet might suggest it was a crew chief or similar enlisted man as officer's were primarily flying personnel and it's not too likely they would consider a steel helmet a keepsake. But....we never know. I think I have seen a similar helmet somewhere over the years but just can't recall where - it was not in the hands of a veteran but more likely in the collectors open market somewhere.
