Any ideas? Crank turns to rotate wooden balls which are loose and spin on their spokes. Cast body. Wood handles. No MFG marking. Made to be mounted (at top)

Very strange, indeed! I have no idea what the purpose was but it would sure give your arms a workout.

that's what I was going to say, early exercise equipment. Very Interesting.....

Never seen anything like it. Was thinkng along the lines of a leather or metal flattening device perhaps...

Have you tried it out as a massager on someone’s back? Lol....

Curious about its 'top' (as you have it oriented) and whether its 'mounting holes' were meant to mount it to something else, or something else to it. Can't really see by your pics -- are those holes countersunk in any way on either side??

AnythingObscure, That's a very good Q and the answer is, no. No countersinking at all. I call it the top only because I feel certain it almost had to sit atop some material.

It appears to me to be an implement to cause agitation in some sort of finishing process perhaps?
I would venture to suggest felting or cloth finishing perhaps hide softening; It may even be a mechanical replacement for the "Possing stick" [US wash plunger]

The more I look the more I suspect it is for "Fulling" cloth

Dave_Sandra....I think you're on to something. It seems like a leather finishing tool to me but fulling makes much more sense..I'll keep researching but thank you so much!
