Thank you for looking at this oil on board painting of a gentleman. Does anyone know who he is or what country he's even from? Or even who the artist may be....
Love to hear any information on this and thank you in advance.
The style of long stand up collars on shirts and jackets was popular from about the 1830s- 50s in the US. Suspect time period was similar for the UK, but not certain.
From what I know and have observed in period works (paintings, etchings and photographs), the highest collars tend to be the earliest; so I would put your painting toward the early part of the timeline.
An online search of the name and years may give you some real possibles.

Did a quick check and found a possibility:

Glad to help.
Not certain it is that guy but certainly possible. Maybe provenance will support the possible ID.

Scott - thank you for your assistance on this matter! I appreciate your time on it and will follow up.
Best regards. Allie
Hi
Do you know anyone with an "Ancestry.com" account ? On there, someone has "benjamn Brown 1781-1848" in their family tree. There is also a copy of his will and testament! I just downloaded a copy. By all accounts Mr Brown was a very rich man!
This is the link to the "tree" - not sure what you can see without an account.
If you want me to email you the will and testament - let me know
Regards
Paul

Dear Paulnot - thank you so much for your input. Sadly don't know anyone on Ancestry. Would like a copy - can you send to east2westfurniture@yahoo.com please. Thanks again. Allie.
Hi Allie
email sent... did you get it ?
P
Yes thank you we got it - most interesting. Not sure how to navigate around this site. And reply to e-mails. Did you get my message above with our email contact in it?
Thank you for all your hard work and can't wait to sit down with the will and read it when I've a quiet moment. It will be most interesting! Thank you again. Aly
Hi Aly
I have emailed you...but just in case there is a problem, you really need to check out this artist as a potential for your painting.

If the Will and Testament I sent you checks out, then they would have been only 100 miles apart and the artist was known for travelling to paint portraits.
Google his works... the similarities are very convincing...at least to me!
best wishes
Paul
