Hello Fellow Collectors,
Today we would like to share with you one of our prized Ansonia Clocks.
The model is called "Crystal Regulator No. 4". It is from circa 1906 and can be found on page 136 of noted authority Tran Duy Ly's book Ansonia Clocks and Watches. At one time, this model appraised at $3,600. Since then we've gone through a Recession and who knows where things will settle after this Covid-19 Pandemic is finally under control, but market value really doesn't matter to us as this clock will be something that our children will have to deal with when we're no longer around. This model originally listed for about $32.00. Adjusted for inflation that would be the equivalent of about $910 in 2020, so this clock has still held its original value if not appreciated in value even in today's market.
Ansonia offered a series of eight different Royal Bonn Porcelain Crystal Regulators. In my experience, the No. 7 and No. 8 seem to be less common models. They listed for more at up to $45-$55 depending on several optional "upgrades". Adjusted for inflation certain versions of the No. 7 would have originally listed for $1,550 in 2020 Dollars. Here's a link to photo of a No. 7 which auctioned for $3,600 in October of 2018: https://p1.liveauctioneers.com/289/128609/65426035_1_x.jpg?auto=webp&format=pjpg&version=1538482822
These Crystal Regulators are doubly collectible since the combine Royal Bonn Porcelain Top and Bottoms, along with a decorated gold plated Crystal Regulator, an Open Escapement (Brocot) movement featuring Ruby Pallets, a Porcelain Enamel Double Dial, and an ornate simulated mercury vial Pendulum.
Pendulums containing real mercury can often still be found in French Crystal Regulators. The Mercury expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes. These changes help the pendulum keep a constant center of gravity which in turn enables a clock so equipped to keep time more accurately when indoor temperatures fluctuated as they did before the days of modern climate controlled living spaces. Mercury was known to be a hazardous material by the time this Ansonia was manufactured so simulated Mercury (Steel Slugs or Cylinders) were used instead.
Even with the simulated Mercury Pendulum, this is a good mechanical Timekeeper, staying accurate to within about a minute or two over the course of it's 8-day wind down. It has been completely serviced. We've had it for about 10 years now, and mostly have it on static display.
Because of the painted flower design, my wife (who found it) named it "Rose". I suppose that Rose is really her clock. I just take care of her. That seems to be a pretty common theme around this house. When did that happen??? :)
We hope that you have enjoyed our Ansonia Crystal Regulator No. 4.
Thank you for your time.

Hey Russ. Thanks for dropping by and for your "Love it" click of approval. Glad you liked our Ansonia Regulator No. 4. We went to an auction during a snow storm to get it. :)
What is the best crystal regulator made (in your opinion) for looks and presence . Its hard to find gifts when your parents are dealers too . I want to buy them a really special clock . Thanks in advance for any ideas . Steve
Hello Steve74,
In my opinion Ansonia made some of the nicest American Crystal Regulators.
Much depends upon your parents personal tastes, your budget and the time you have to find what you're looking for. You're an Antique Dealer so you know that a particular model may not come on to market very often. Top of the line clocks in excellent condition are rare and expensive. Here's an online catalog of Ansonia Clocks: http://www.antiqueansoniaclocks.com/Ansonia-Clock-Model-Names.php
Hope that helps. If you have more questions, please post your e-mail address and I'll contact you directly. Once I have your address I can remove it from public view if you wish.
Regards,
Bruce
