The Border Troops of the German Democratic Republic (Grenztruppen der DDR) were responsible for guarding the Berlin Wall and East Germany’s international borders. They were much more like an army than a border police force and were organised along military lines. Unlike most border forces, the Grenztruppen were focused less on defending against illegal entry and more on stopping illegal exit, and preventing DDR citizens from defecting to the west. On 1 July 1990, the GDR's border control regime along the borders with West Germany and West Berlin was ended and shortly before the reunification of Germany the Grenztruppen were disbanded.
My guess is that they were not popular. The last photo is a nice touch.
I've had the dubious fortune to live with 2 diff. Krauts who lived in Berlin when the Wall came down. The one from the West, wanted them to repair the wall and, then there's Whacky Jacky who was perfectly happy in the East and I'm not sure she even noticed when the Wall came down. LOL !!
That's a really great hat marking an amazing bit of history elanski. The last photo is indeed a nice touch, as Fort has said.
BB2 I remember Whacky Jacky from a photo here years ago. You moved on?
Whacky is stuck in Barcelona due to virus thing. We have our differences besides age. I'm watching for disturbances in her area.
BB2 visible that far? Lol.
Her disturbances have reached the papers. I named her "Tropical Disturbance Jacky". LOL ! But miss her, I think.
