    Latest kyratisation!

I got this 4.5 by 3 centimetres old brass bumblebee brooch, I have same model in sterling as a hatpin bearing the Meyle and Mayer dragonfly maker's mark, exactly similar (except for the places for stones) with wings in plique à jour enamel. PIC #4

A bad paint job on the thorax, poor acrylic stones remaining.

The cleaning with kind of Windex with ammonia removed the paint and brightened the brass, I removed the faux rhinestones!

I filled the wings cells with acrylic "Glossy Accents" from rangerink.com (similar to Judikins Diamond Glaze), then once dried applied a mix of ecoline ink and glossy accent thinned with water to color the "enamel".
I made sure no cloisons top showed over painting by scraping with a thin blade.

The body was painted with same mix of black\brown ecoline ink and glossy accent.

Then glued with hypocement acrylic faux half pearls (nail art supply!) for the wings and 2 tiny green cabs I had in my stash for the eyes.

Final touch was mattify the enamels with jewellery fiber glass brush pen. (These Art Nouveau pieces were matte enamel!)

Has any Meyle and Mayer collector heard of the firm making brass jewellery?

That's a really pretty brooch but at first I thought it was a beetle (I think it's the dark wine colour?) and you did a great job with it. It's definitely an appropriate brooch to have now with plenty of bees about :P

Absolutely beautiful bee and incredibly lifelike, those lovely delicate wings with the pearl accents are heavenly - top marks on the restoration Pascale you're an artiste

      LaurenRedmond thank you!
You're right, it has that beetle look with this all dark body color... My attempt of giving him a striped suit didn't gave a nice effect! I may have another try but sometimes my attempts results are... Better is worse than good ;-)

Jenni... Thank you so much for your compliments!

Aww, Phil, your visit and superlative words always fill me with joy, love back to you! XO XO

Hi Kyra!!! Good to see you're still at it! I somehow ended up with a bee or fly little brooch myself, that needs the eyes replaced and every time I look at it I think of you. I suppose I'll get to it one day if I ever find any stones that small!!!

Hi Eileen! A great private Facebook group managed by Sandy Campbell has tons of advices for how to do that! I would love to see you there :-D
Sandy uses Testors paints coated with Duraclear varnish. I think spray is better for covering a damaged plating when brush is better for details.
If your piece is valuable, it is generally advised to be the more conservative possible...;-)
    19. kyratango kyratango, 4 years ago
Aahh, I thought you wanted to restore the gilt finish on your piece... for my bumblebee I mixed acrylic varnish\glue Judikins Diamond Glaze with Ecoline ink, applied with a thin paint brush. Once dried, it is rather shiny, for the matte effect I brushed it wit a fiber glass brush stylus (watch maker de rusting device). If not pleased with the result, I only have to let it soak in water and scrape it once white and soft! The plique a jour effect is given with same stuff :-)

Oops just saw your previous comment!
You'll have to test what will remove the gold Aceton will, I think better than windex ammonia, and applied with q-tip you can avoid the central "stone" (if jelly belly, CAUTION!), aceton will remove the rhinestones with time of impregnation.

Oh my what a talent you have. My first reaction would be don't touch old stuff and I still belive in not restoring if you don't have to. But I have also come to see that you are such a great craftman and that you mend and save jewelry that has flaws or are boken and that they otherwise would not have benen worn so I have changed my mind :)
You do such a wonderful job! Who can not love this bumblebee ?! It is fantastic!

Sorry for bad spelling, the autocorrect on my Phone is not in english and playes me tricks when I look away :)
    23. kyratango kyratango, 4 years ago
Thank you Elizabethan! Yes, generally I won't touch something in good condition, only wounded or incomplete pieces ;-)
The auto correct, gosh, a pity for me too!
