For a few years over a decade ago, I collected autographed photos, mostly of movie stars, but also of some other well known people. Most are stored in a large binder, around a hundred photos and signed cards, I think, but I have a few hanging on my walls. The first two, of Edward G. Robinson and Walter Huston, I found in a local antique shop, consigned from the estate of a local retired stage and movie actress who had worked with many Hollywood actors. She was quite the big deal, locally. I don't remember the source for the Loretta Young and Luise Rainer autographs. Luise Rainer must have liked to sign as I have two signed photos and a signed card by her. All photos are 8"x10".

Luise Rainer may be the least well known today of these four but was the first actress to win an academy award in consecutive years:

She lived to be 104 years old and gave the interview below at age 100:

Wonderful nostalgic photos of some very talented actors, having them autographed must have meant alot to their owner - I had a few when younger myself, had a big crush on the tennis player Bjorn Borg & was thrilled he sent an actual pen-signed signature on his photo :)

      kwqd, Cool.

      Good old Eddie G. <3

I recall watching that interview with Luise Rainier. She was not overly impressed with Paul Muni. };-)

Thanks for your comments, keramikos! EGR was a very advanced collector of fine art, especially paintings. He often told a story of a very famous painting displayed in a local museum where he would sit for hours looking at the painting and plotting ways to steal it. I will see if I can find that story again and put it in the description so it will be easier to find.

      kwqd, You're welcome. :-)

Yeah, EGR is cited in the credits of 1956's "Lust For Life" as one of those who kindly loaned artwork for the film.

He unfortunately had to sell a lot of his art to settle a divorce:

He actually had to sell his entire collection of paintings, but sold it to someone who allowed the stipulation that you could buy some of it back at some future date, which he did. I think he bough back 14 paintings. It must have been like selling his children!

His close friend, Vincent Price, was also a huge collector. Price worked with Sears, I think, to develop a line of fine art for their stores. I posted one of the paintings from the Vincent Price Collection to CW a couple of years ago....

Yeah, the artsy piece mentions that EGR was able to buy back some of them.

That story about old Vince Price sounds familiar. What a guy. };-)
