This bowl is 6.75" in diameter and 2.75" high. It is painted on all sides and marked and signed "Japan" on the bottom. I call this the "bird bowl", but.... Another bowl bought to use. I found someone who had a half dozen of these bowls, some slightly used and some showing no signs of use. They were actually a bit pricey at $10 each, but I liked them, so bought a used and and unused one. I will use one and put one away. The decoration is all hand done and very naively rendered, but still attractive, I think. Guessing they are meant to be general purpose bowls made for export. They are fairly heavy and thick. I haven't spent any time into trying to identify the maker, yet.
The bird may be a wagtail, a symbol of happiness in Japan.
That's cool that you're using them for their intended purpose. It's one thing to sit there and look at items like this, and it's a whole nother thing to use them and to enjoy them. Only then can you appreciate the design.
My mother was Japanese so I grew up eating meals out of items similar to this.
What a beautiful ceramic bowl with the black bird & colorful flowers, a really nice find
Cute little bird on it actually- he looks shocked to be there! :P
Agree dav2no1! I've been using some of my Japanese pottery for the past few days.
Thanks, Jenni! It is a pretty perky bowl!
