I think this was a salesman's sample box of cameos from Torre del Greco. It has 53 unset, loose cameos-most are shell , one coral, some ivory. All are carved differently and very well done. If anyone has seen anything similar, please advise.
Gorgeous set and I imagine quite rare. Have you tried a search of "sample box of cameos from Torre del Greco" ? If you do, the search in google images you should get a lot of hits.
How are the cameos affixed in place? I have seen a salesman's box for Czech glass cameos, but it is what you would expect, with the same models in different colors & style numbers written next to them. I'm thinking this might be a collector's way of displaying their cameos.
Most of the cameos are run of the mill 20th century helmet shell cameos. I can see, although not well, some conch shell cameos, which I suspect are the ones you think are ivory. They look like better work. And then you have one excellent coral cameo amidst them all.
It's giving me ideas about what to do with some of my own cameos. They are very difficult to show well.
