The Eastman Kodak 'Saving Dimes For Cameras' Cylinder Bank
Circa 1915
These were marked by the giver (possibly a bank or maybe a camera store) with name and city location on the label,
and when the person receiving it filled it with enough dimes, they could purchase a Kodak camera from those listed.
Evidently there is a long lost code that can open these. Perhaps someone knows it?
Fairly scarce item.
Cool item. Never seen one. Now I want to know how to open it.
These are uncommon. Refer to my CW post for more information: https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/176549-eastman-kodak-dime-bank-save-your-dimes?in=rniederman
The combination is supposedly these steps:
* Set 0 on the combination cap opposite the pointer.
* Turn the cap in the direction of increasing numbers one complete turn until 20 is at the pointer.
* Turn back stopping at 4, forward to 12, then back to 10.
* It should now open.
My bank is to old to try to force the combination.
Scarce now that you have all of them! ¯\_(?)_/¯
Thank you rniederman! The combo didn't work on the first one I tried, but it did on subsequent ones. Hallelujah! -
I bought one several years ago, along with a few old cameras, from a woman who's husband had passed away and had it as part of his collection. it's always been a sort of holy grail to me. Oh my surprise last week when I met an older gentleman who had two on display in his photo studio. When I asked about them, he mentioned he had a box full. Turned out he had 10 more in a cigar box at the back of the display case. When I asked if he wanted to sell any of the extra ones, without hesitation he said, "Sure, all of them". After a very brief negotiation, I became the new proud owner of 10 Kodak banks plus an old cigar box. I'm still pinching myself.
John Kratz: Indeed. I still count this as one of my best finds ever.
