This is a Hubley #1928 Pile Driver Truck made in '64-'65. This has one of the 6 dark stakes remaining indicating it's from '64, '65 had natural wood stakes. It's about 14" high with the pile driver mechanism extended. It drops the driver weight at the top just like a big one and will drive the 4 1/2" long 3/8" in the ground with no problem. The tailgate is missing a section(it looks like a stress fracture from the impacts) but it still functions.
Some of you are probably thinking it seems dangerous, I agree. It's not just the cracked or hurt bigger fingers, a gullible small kid's(brother, sister, or in my case cousins) finger tip could be severed at the hole where the driver head enters, it's just like a 3/8" circle die cutter with sheer edges. Especially if the finger was properly placed....maybe even on the first try.

    Thanks,
    Bill

They must have been running out of orig. ideas when they came up with this. A pile driver must have been on the "long list".

That is really neat. I'll bet it wasn't free. Kids back then were men.

BB2 Hubley was in trouble and sold to Gabriel in '66. They made bigger pickup toys trying to get into the Tonka market. They had some other trucks( both collectable) that year that were different than any previous stuff. I guess they tried something new.

FtApache, I was actually amazed for what I got it for. I've seen some without paint nearly this good and without a box sell for more. The out riggers easily come off and are usually lost on loose examples. It's one of the top two most desirable Hubley pick ups, it's cooler than the Carpenter's Truck with the impossible to find tools and plastic top when unboxed.

Probably the only reason I commented, is because it's something most people wouldn't know about or care about. I've had well diggers (borers) and been fascinated by their rigs. I've watched pile drivers on barges and been amazed when I witnessed an 10" shaft driven into the ground 10-12" with each drop of the weight. I don't, or have never, lived in Brooklyn. LOL !

I love watching one in action, the impact is unbelievable.
